  55. 'Before Dawn' is Shareware! This means you may test 'Before Dawn'
  56. freely for four weeks.  If you decide to use  'Before Dawn' regu-
  57. larly or use it  longer than the specified four week period,  you
  58. have to register as a user. The registration fee is 20 DM!
  59. If you enclose the eqivalent of $20 you will  receive a disk with
  60. the latest version of 'Before Dawn'.

  73. 3. A brief description
  74.  
  75. 'Before Dawn' is a modular screensaver for all ATARI ST/STE/TT or
  76. Falcon. It uses  GEM-Image  graphics to display  animations while
  77. saving your precious screen. 'Before Dawn' offers three different
  78. modules:
  79.  
  80. - 'Warp 5 - Mr. Sulu!', a starfield simulation.
  81. - 'Bouncing Hole', a peektrough-hole bounces around your screen.
  82. - 'At the Movies',  a rather complex  module to design  your  own
  83.   animations without any knowledge of C or any other  programming
  84.   language!
  85.  
  86. All modules allow to load GEM-Image pixel files,  so that you can
  87. alter the  apperance of your screensaver. Example: you would like
  88. to see your company's logo bouncing around the screen,  while the
  89. saver is active? No problem: just scan the logo and change it in-
  90. to the format  'Before Dawn' needs.  You may use any graphic pro-
  91. gram that is able to create GEM-Image files.

  93. This manual will try to explain how to use  'Before Dawn', but it
  94. will try to do so very briefly.  The reason why is, that the next
  95. update of 'Before Dawn' will bring many changes.  This would mean
  96. writing the manual again - a very  difficult task if you're not a
  97. native speaker of English.  On the other  hand there are not that
  98. much foreign customers by now. I hope the information supplied is
  99. sufficient to get to work with 'Before Dawn'.  You will also find
  100. English  resource files and two  IMGs that explain how to  create
  101. animations for the  modules   'At the Movies'  and  'Warp 5 - Mr.
  102. Sulu!' in this folder!

  107. 4. Installing 'Before Dawn'
  108.  
  109. Copy  DAWN.ACC  and  DAWN.RSC into the rootdirectory of your boot
  110. disk.  Copy  DAWNAUTO.PRG into your AUTO folder.  All other files
  111. may be placed anywhere on your disk.
  112. Reboot your system. After you have rebooted your system, you may
  113. do all necessary alterations in 'Before Dawn'.  Usually the pre-
  114. set options  work fine,  but paths to the  IMG files have to  be
  115. set.

  118. 5. How to use the dialogs
  119.  
  120. 'Before Dawn' uses window dialogs. All buttons are selectable by
  121. mouse and by keyboard. If  you prefer  using the  keyboard  just
  122. press the underlined key in  combination with the  ALTERNATE key
  123. to select/deselect the item. The ENTER key on the numeric keypad
  124. skips from one editable field to the next.
  125. 'OK'  usually leaves the dialog and accepts all alterations.  It
  126. is by default selectable with the  RETURN  key.  'Cancel' leaves
  127. the dialog without accepting the alterations. 'Set' can be found
  128. in all but the  'Info'  dialog and acts like  'OK'  only that it
  129. does not exit the dialog.

  135.   selects one of the modules 'Before Dawn' offers.

  137. 'Setup'
  138.   opens the 'Setup' dialog for the selected module.

  141.   if  selected  'Before Dawn'  randomly  selects one of the three
  142.   modules when it is activated.

  163.   selects all the  system events that will be watched by  'Before
  164.   Dawn'.

  166. 'Timesharing'
  167.   when selected, 'Before Dawn' not only allows other processes to
  168.   make screen outputs via the AES, but also continuously makes an
  169.   'event_multi'.
  170.  
  171. 'Center dialogs'
  172.   if selected all  dialogs are  displayed  at the  center of  the
  173.   screen.

  175. 'Change color index 0 to black'
  176.   the RGB values of color index 0 are changed to black if a  XIMG
  177.   file is loaded.  Usefull if you are using an ATARI in low ST or
  178.   TT resolutions.

  180. 'Wake-/sleep corner'
  181.   selects the size of the  wake-/sleep corner in pixel.  The wake
  182.   corner is the bottom left and the sleep corner the bottom right
  183.   corner of the screen.

  185. 'Mouse sensitivity'
  186.   selects how many mouse-packets shall be received  until screen-
  187.   saving is terminated.

  189. 'Reserve memory'
  190.   reserves memory for IMG caching.
  191.  
  192. 'Sound by ...'
  193.   selects the program that takes  care of the sound effects.  You
  194.   may use PAULA, a player for MOD-files,  or CrazySounds a player
  195.   for samples sold by 'maxon' in Germany.

  197. 'Change vectors'
  198.   selects when  'Before Dawn'  should change the  system  vectors
  199.   selected under 'Watch ...'.  Usually  'always'  works fine, but
  200.   some programs just don't like it.  So if you encounter a system
  201.   hangup while  'Before Dawn' activates itself,  try setting this
  202.   popup to 'at boot' or 'after dialog'.

  207. 5.3. Setup 'Bouncing Hole'

  209. 'Image-File Selection'
  210.   selects the IMG file to be used by this module. You may enter a
  211.   wildcard to randomly select between more IMGs.

  213. 'MOD/HSN-File Selection'
  214.   selects the MOD- or HSN-file to be played.  HSN-file are played
  215.   by CrazySounds whenever the IMG touches a side of the screen.
